Nuremberg/Hinwil, 27 September 2016. Highly efficient Skyfall overhead conveyors from Swiss systems provider Ferag AG are now conquering the US, Canada and Mexico. In North America, the company based in the Zürcher Oberland is therefore strengthening its collaboration with SDI Systems in the US, a group specialized in intralogistics solutions for multi-channel retailing . The first joint project is nearing completion: in just a few weeks, several SkySorter lines fitted with a total of 5000 hangers are set to begin operating in the main distribution centre of department store chain Stage Stores in Jacksonville, Texas. The new Skyfall installation is the largest that Ferag has yet delivered to the packaging and distribution sector.
As the global leader in postpress processing systems, Ferag has a decades-long presence in the NAFTA region. In conveyor technology applications for packaging and distribution logistics, the Swiss family-owned business is still considered a relatively new, albeit promising player.

In order to strengthen its North American footing in this segment, Ferag will be cooperating more closely with the specialists at SDI Systems, a long-established player based near Los Angeles. “We have found in SDI Systems an ideal partner for the introduction and wider distribution of our Skyfall system in the USA, Canada and Mexico. We are very pleased that, from the very start, we were able to convince the Californians about the advantages of our new technology,” is how Ferag CEO Jürg Möckli described the cooperation, which was announced at FachPack in Nuremberg. It was mainly the flexibility, service-friendliness and energy efficiency of the Skyfall system that sparked the interest of the partner-to-be in a joint marketing campaign for the innovation in the NAFTA region.

At the same time, according to Jürg Möckli, Ferag is very proud that the cooperation with SDI is already bearing fruit: currently, the first Skyfall installation to be realized together with SDI is taking shape at Texas fashion-chain Stage Store. The distribution centre where SkySorter will bring a significant boost to efficiency is located in Jacksonville, Texas. Here, Stage Store transfers goods to stock that arrive from overseas via Houston. These include footwear and clothing labels sold by the prestigious department store such as Calvin Klein, Clarks, Dockers, Jockey, Lee, Levis and Ralph Lauren. The Stage Store head office is in Houston. The metropolitan area on the Gulf of Mexico is not only the fourth largest city in the US, but also has one of the country’s busiest ports. After brief intermediate storage, products are redistributed from Jacksonville to the chain’s retail outlets, currently numbering 850.

After integration of the system into the existing logistics centre, it will be among the largest Skyfall installations anywhere. It includes ten forwarding stations, an intermediate storage buffer, a sortation buffer and 24 packaging lines. Linking all these areas is the SkyTrain, with more than 5000 hangers designed to carry loads up to six kilograms.

Ferag partner SDI Systems, who in this case also acted as system integrators, see themselves as the preferred provider of logistics solutions for fashion producers, retail clothing chains and fashion houses. The Californian company was founded in 1977, and has implemented a major share of this sector’s goods distribution centres and optimized their supply chains.

Sortation and intermediate storage of textile goods: the Skyfall installation becoming operational at Stage Stores has an intermediate buffer with capacity for 5000 pockets and a sortation buffer with capacity for 3000 pockets.
